Aim


The aim of this Introduction to Dementia is to give the carer an insight into what dementia is, and how it affects people in different ways.


Objectives


By the end of the course the candidates will be able to:

  • Explain what dementia is
  • Discuss how dementia affects people in different ways

The course will include:

  • What is dementia?
  • Who gets dementia?
  • What causes dementia?
  • Incidence of dementia
  • Symptoms of dementia
  • Types of dementia 

Diagnosis

  • The need for good communication
  • Barriers to communication

It is hoped that as a result of this introduction, carers will wish to extend their knowledge, look at person-centred care in more depth and undertake the 3 day Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow programme accredited to the Alzheimer's Society.
